NICE has said ClearGuard HD antimicrobial barrier caps can be used in the NHS to prevent bloodstream infections in people having haemodialysis with a central venous catheter.
NICE has also said more data should be collected on long-term exposure to chlorhexidine, especially in children.
Central venous catheters have caps on the end. ClearGuard caps contain a rod that is coated in the disinfectant chlorhexidine acetate, which reduces the risk of bacteria from your catheter entering your bloodstream.
