Hip and knee joint replacements are the most common orthopaedic operations done in the UK. In 2024, more than 250,000 primary hip and knee replacements were recorded in the National Joint Registry. This figure is expected to rise as the population ages and the prevalence of osteoarthritis rises. The demand for hip and knee replacements places a substantial burden on NHS services, including surgical capacity, inpatient beds, and physiotherapy and community support.
