Patient safety

People have the right to be involved in discussions and make informed decisions about their care, as described in NICE's information on making decisions about your care.

Making decisions using NICE guidelines explains how we use words to show the strength (or certainty) of our recommendations, and has information about prescribing medicines (including off-label use), professional guidelines, standards and laws (including on consent and mental capacity), and safeguarding.

Healthcare professionals should follow our general guidelines for people delivering care:

1.13 Monitoring for acute blood transfusion reactions

1.13.1

Monitor the person's condition and vital signs before, during and after blood transfusions, to detect acute transfusion reactions that may need immediate investigation and treatment. [2015]

1.13.2

Observe people who are having or have had a blood transfusion in a suitable environment with staff who are able to monitor and manage acute reactions. [2015]

1.14 Electronic patient identification systems

1.14.1

Consider using a system that electronically identifies patients to improve the safety and efficiency of the blood transfusion process. [2015]
