Are you looking for real life examples of how NICE guidance and standards have been used to improve the quality of health and social care services around the UK?

The NICE Local practice collection brings together hundreds of case studies highlighting projects happening around the country. Find out how you can improve quality and improve efficiency.

You can search the collection for examples relevant to your area of work, be inspired to set up your own innovative scheme locally, or submit an example of work you're already doing.

The NICE Local practice collection includes shared learning examples showing how NICE guidance and standards have been put into practice, and quality and productivity case studies outlining quality improvement initiatives which have also helped cut costs and save money.

Shared learning

The NICE shared learning collection contains examples showing how NICE guidance and standards have been put into practice by a range of health, local government and social care organisations. The examples include key learning points and contact details of project leaders. Examples go through a simple quality assurance process before being published in the collection. A Shared Learning Award for the best example is presented annually at the NICE annual conference.

Submissions and quality assurance process

Each example that's submitted is checked against a set of criteria before being added to the website.

Each example is checked to ensure:

  1. It highlights learning that could be useful to others.
  2. All submission fields are complete and it is written in easy to understand English, free from jargon.
  3. There are clear objectives, including an explanation of what was happening before the initiative, why it was needed and how it was implemented.
  4. It outlines the barriers the organisation faced when implementing the initiative and the methods used to overcome these.
  5. Where appropriate, it outlines the effect the change had on quality, productivity and any cost savings made, and there is a clear evaluation process for measuring results.
  6. Any industry sponsorship has been declared.

Please use the online form when submitting your example - and please make sure you have completed all the relevant sections, including contact and data protection details.

Incomplete submissions and those failing to meet the above criteria will be returned. They can be resubmitted once the appropriate information has been completed.

If you need help completing the online form, contact our Shared Learning Assistant Project Manager.

Shared learning awards

The NICE Shared Learning Awards recognise and reward examples of how NICE guidance has been put into practice in the NHS, local authorities, voluntary and a range of other organisations. This also gives you an opportunity to pass on your knowledge and expertise of implementing NICE guidance and the barriers you overcame. Tell us about any problems you faced, how you dealt with them and what others can learn from your experiences.

The deadline for submissions to the 2014 Shared Learning Awards has now passed. However if you have an example of putting NICE guidance into practice, we'd still like to hear about it. Please submit your example and you could be in with a chance of winning next year's award.

Quality and Productivity case studies

The quality and productivity case studies (formerly known as the QIPP case study collection) contain innovative examples of ways in which health and social care organisations are improving quality locally whilst making cost savings. If rolled out nationally, the projects featured in the collection could save over £2 billion. Prior to publication in the collection, case studies are evaluated by NICE using criteria covering quality improvement, savings, evidence and implementation, and are externally peer reviewed. The quality and productivity collection is also informed by Cochrane review topics.
