Clinical guideline development methods: The guidelines manual 2012
How NICE clinical guidelines are developed: an overview for stakeholders, the public and the NHS (fourth edition)
This booklet summarises the process used for developing NICE clinical guidelines from January 2009 onwards, including:
- how Guideline Development Group members are selected
- how organisations can register as stakeholders
- the stages when registered stakeholders can contribute to the development of a clinical guideline.
This booklet and the 2009 edition of ‘The guidelines manual’ describe the process and methods used for all clinical guidelines starting scoping after 5 January 2009. Guidelines already in development at this date will switch to the methods and processes described in the 2009 edition when the draft documents are being prepared for consultation. The draft and published full guidelines will specify which edition of ‘The guidelines manual’ was used for each stage of development.
The booklet was first published as an appendix to ‘The guidelines manual’ and will be updated as needed if the process changes. This edition replaces the April 2007 edition of ‘The guideline development process: an overview for stakeholders, the public and the NHS’ (reference N1233).
