&####8216;The guidelines manual&####8217;: Consultation on the 2008 update

NICE has carried out a review of ‘The guidelines manual’. This document describes the detailed process and methodology used to produce NICE clinical guidelines. It applies to both the NICE’s standard clinical guidelines and short clinical guidelines programmes.

Points to note:

1. The draft manual includes a new step in the clinical guideline development process: the ‘pre-publication check’. This check enables registered stakeholders to raise concerns about factual errors that may exist in a guideline after consultation and before its publication. This process will be piloted for a few clinical guidelines during the consultation on ’The guidelines manual’. The results from the pilot will be used to inform the final guidelines manual.

2. The ‘Guide to the short clinical guideline process’ has been amended and incorporated into ‘The guidelines manual’ as appendix N. This appendix will replace the current version of the document.

3. ‘The guideline development process: an overview for stakeholders, the public and the NHS’ (appendix O) is not included in the consultation because it is a derivative product from ’The guidelines manual’ and therefore contains the same material.

The draft update of ‘The guidelines manual’ is now open for consultation. We would like to receive comments on this document from anyone who has an interest in the NICE’s clinical guidelines programme. Comments should be made using the comments proforma below, and the closing date for receipt of comments is Tuesday 1 July 2008.

Note: this document does not constitute the final version of ‘The guidelines manual’. The text is preliminary and may change after consultation.
