Research and Development Advisory Committee

The Research and Development Advisory Committee advises NICE about its research and development work. The Committee includes representatives from key partner organisations, as well as direct lay representation. The chair is Professor Tony Culyer (CBE) who is Chief Scientist at the Institute for Work and Health in Toronto, where he is on leave from his home university at York. The vice-chair is Professor Richard Lilford, a professor of Clinical Epidemiology in the Department of Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of Birmingham medical school.

The committee's role

The Research and Development Committee:

  • advises NICE on its programme of research
  • advise NICE on the strategy and processes it uses to undertake its research and development work
  • champions the research and development programme to key research partners
  • provides a national forum for commenting on matters of importance to health services research, with other organisations wherever possible.
