Local Government Briefings
The new Local Government External Reference Group will advise NICE about its new products: Local Government Public Health Briefings. The Reference Group will assist the Centre for Public Health Excellence at NICE in preparing these Briefings for local government in the lead up to Local Authorities assuming responsibility for a range of public health functions from April 2013.
NICE has appointed the chair and members of its Reference Group: the committee is chaired by a former local authority Chief Executive, and its members include councillors (elected members), council officers, community representatives and Directors of Public Health.
The new arrangements for public health offer the opportunity for a more integrated public health system led by Directors of Public Health, elected members and senior officers. Each of these groups will need access to the best available evidence-based information about effective and cost effective public health activity, which will help improve the health of their communities.
NICE is uniquely equipped to provide independent action-focused and evidence-based public health advice to local government and it will do so through the Local Government Public Health Briefings. These Briefings will help local government meet its new public health responsibilities, by focussing on a broad array of topics, populations and services across the range of arenas where local authorities will play a public health role.

NICE and Local Government
NICE produces independent evidence-based public health guidance on ways of improving health and well-being for local authorities, education, voluntary organisations and community groups as well as the NHS.
As the lead responsibility for public health moves to local government, NICE will continue to develop guidance and will also provide evidence-based advice to support effective local action.
We will be working with local authorities to explore how evidence of effective and cost effective public health activities can be used to improve local services and accountability to local communities.
NICE is establishing a group of local government partners: elected members and officers to work with us to consider a range of advice products that will be relevant and of value to the new public health system.
If you're interested in getting involved, please send your name, contact details and a brief summary of your experience and interest to NICE at localauthoritypartners@nice.org.uk
