HDA publications

Many Health Development Agency (HDA) publications are available in PDF format below. These publications were either:

  • produced by the HDA, or
  • commissioned by them, but published after its functions were transferred to NICE.

While these publications help support evidence-based decision making by public health practitioners, they do not represent NICE guidance.

Sugars in the diet: A briefing paper

This is a briefing paper originally prepared for the Health Education Authority on dietary sugars and human disease, the report of the Panel on Dietary sugars of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy. The evidence was considered for and against the role of sugars in the development of diseases (tooth decay, obesity) and appropriate recommendations made. The report also addresses the consumption of soft drinks, sugary foods, weaning foods and consumption of artifical sweeteners.
