HDA publications

Many Health Development Agency (HDA) publications are available in PDF format below. These publications were either:

 • produced by the HDA, or
 • commissioned by them, but published after its functions were transferred to NICE.

While these publications help support evidence-based decision making by public health practitioners, they do not represent NICE guidance.

Changing preconceptions (volume 2): The HEA folic acid campaign 1995-1998 (research report)

This research report addresses how serious birth abnormalities affecting babies born in the UK could be prevented by taking adequate amounts of folic acid – a safe and naturally occurring B vitamin. Between autumn 1995 and spring 1998, the HEA ran the first national integrated campaign aimed at increasing the average daily intake of folates and folic acid in women who may become pregnant by at least 400 micrograms from foods containing natural folate, foods fortified with folic acid and supplements. Further details of the first national campaign can be found in the summary report: Changing preconceptions (volume 1): The HEA folic acid campaign 1995-1998.
