HDA publications

Many Health Development Agency (HDA) publications are available in PDF format below. These publications were either:

  • produced by the HDA, or
  • commissioned by them, but published after its functions were transferred to NICE.

While these publications help support evidence-based decision making by public health practitioners, they do not represent NICE guidance.

Ethnic inequalities in health and smoking behaviour. The role of social capital and social support

This report examines levels of social capital and social support for white and minority ethnic groups in the UK and how these factors may contribute to ethnic differences in health and health-related behaviour. Three national surveys are analysed: the Health Survey for England (1993-95), the HEA Health and Lifestyles Survey (1992) and the HEA Survey of Black and Minority Ethnic Groups (1992) for adults from white, African, Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladesh groups. The study focuses on variation in reported general health, psychosocial health, cigarette smoking and tobacco chewing.
