Fergus Macbeth, Director of the Centre for Clinical Practice

Fergus Macbeth

Fergus joined NICE in 2008 and is responsible for the clinical guidelines programme.

Career history

Fergus graduated from Oxford University in 1973 with a degree in Medicine. As an oncologist with an interest in lung cancer he ishoping to continue some clinical work at one of the London hospitals.During his career Fergus has held the following positions:

  • Consultant oncologist at the Beatson Oncology Centre Glasgow and Velindre Hospital Cardiff
  • Director of the National Collaborating Centre for Cancer, producing cancer service guidance and clinical guidelines for NICE

He has been involved in developing clinical guidelines for the Royal College of Radiologists and for SIGN in Scotland, and has worked on a number of national advisory committees relating to clinical effectiveness and cancer services in Wales and England

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of:

  • Radiologists;
  • Physicians of London; and
  • Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow

He is joint coordinating editor of the Cochrane Lung Cancer Group and chief investigator of a large multicentre national trial investigating the use of low molecular weight heparin in patients with lung cancer.
