Fergus Macbeth, Director of the Centre for Clinical Practice
Fergus joined NICE in 2008 and is responsible for the clinical guidelines programme.
Career history
Fergus graduated from Oxford University in 1973 with a degree in Medicine. During his career Fergus has held the following positions:
- Consultant oncologist at the Beatson Oncology Centre Glasgow and Velindre Hospital Cardiff
- Director of the National Collaborating Centre for Cancer, producing cancer service guidance and clinical guidelines for NICE
- Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Support Unit for Wales
He has been involved in developing clinical guidelines for the Royal College of Radiologists and for SIGN in Scotland, and has worked on a number of national advisory committees relating to clinical effectiveness and cancer services in Wales and England. He has honorary position as consultant oncologist at University College London Hospital and is part of the lung cancer team.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of:
- Radiologists;
- Physicians of London; and
- Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow
He is joint coordinating editor of the Cochrane Lung Cancer Group and chief investigator of Fragmatic, a large multicentre national trial investigating the use of low molecular weight heparin in patients with lung cancer.
