Invitation to apply for membership of the Guideline Development Group for the Short Clinical Guideline on Colonoscopic surveillance for prevention of colorectal cancer in patients with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and polyps

NICE have been commissioned by the Department of Health to develop a short clinical guideline on the Colonoscopic surveillance for prevention of colorectal cancer in patients with ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and polyps. We are currently seeking to recruit the following healthcare professionals for the guideline development group (GDG):

  • 2 x Gastroenterologist
  • Specialist nurse for inflammatory bowel disease
  • Nurse endoscopist
  • Colorectal surgeon
  • Pathologist
  • 2 x Patient/Carer Member
  • Radiologist
  • GP

We are also seeking to recruit the following healthcare professional to act as a co-opted advisor to the guideline development group (GDG):

  • Gastroenterological epidemiologist (will not be required to attend every meeting)

GDG members are drawn from the NHS, healthcare professionals, patients and/or carers and academia. They do not represent their organisations but are selected for their expertise, experience of working with multidisciplinary and lay colleagues and understanding of evidence based healthcare.

All members of the GDG have equal status, which reflects the relevance and importance of their different expertise and experience. They include health professionals and researchers as well as patient and/or carer members. All Group members need to attend regular meetings and undertake background reading.

Skills and experience

Applicants will have experience of working with multi-professional committees or working groups at a local, national or regional level. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written skills are required, along with an ability to communicate complex issues to differing audiences. It is desirable that applicants will have experience of guideline development processes, with an understanding of systematic reviews, critical appraisal methods and the role of health economics. Once appointed, the guideline development group will work closely with the short clinical guidelines technical team responsible for reviewing and presenting the evidence to the guideline development group.

Time commitment and conditions

The development phase is scheduled to begin in February 2010 and will continue until October 2010. During this period the short clinical guidelines technical team will host up to 5 GDG meetings which will be held every 4-8 weeks. The meetings will be a mixture of one and two-day events held in Manchester and London. Deadlines will be particularly tight during the validation period of the guideline when drafts will need to be reviewed with short turnaround times.

The dates for the GDG meetings have been provisionally set for:

GDG meeting 1 – 4th & 5th February 2010 (Manchester)
GDG meeting 2 – 5th March 2010 (London)
GDG meeting 3 – 24th March 2010 (London)
GDG meeting 4 ­– 29th & 30th April 2010 (Manchester)
GDG meeting 5 – July 2010 date tbc

Interview date and location

Dates for the interviews have been provisionally set for the 14th December will take place via a teleconference and will last no more than 25 minutes.
