Invitation to apply for the role of 'Professional member' on the Programme Development Group for 'Managing overweight and obesity among children and young people: lifestyle weight management services' within the Centre for Public Health Excellence (CPHE).
The Centre for Public Health Excellence leads the development of public health guidance in the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
We are currently seeking to recruit ‘professional members' for the Programme Development Group (PDG) to develop guidance on Managing overweight and obesity among children and young people: lifestyle weight management services.
PDGs are independent advisory committees which help NICE formulate its public health guidance. The ‘Overweight and obese children and young people:- lifestyle weight management services'PDG will consider and interpret evidence on effectiveness and cost effectiveness, to enable NICE to produce guidance for commissioners, providers of weight management services, health professionals, local authorities, and other relevant organisations on lifestyle weight management services for overweight and obese children and young people.
‘Professional' PDG members are drawn from the NHS, health professionals, local authorities, academia and the wider public health community. They do not represent their organisations but are selected for their expertise, experience of working with multidisciplinary and lay colleagues and their understanding of developing evidence-based recommendations for practice.
NICE's Patient and Public Involvement Programme (PPIP) is recruiting separately for ‘community' members[1]. All members of the PDG have equal status, which reflects the relevance and importance of their different expertise and experience. All PDG members need to attend regular meetings and undertake background reading.
Please note: NICE is also developing guidance on ‘Overweight and obese adults - lifestyle weight management services. This guidance will be developed by a separate PDG and we are currently recruiting a Chair and members for that PDG, also from 17 January to 14 February. However, potential applicants may apply for membership of both PDGs. It is possible for there to be some overlap in membership.
Skills and experience
We are looking for individuals with a specialist or particular interest in weight management for children and young people, for example behaviour change, dietary management or physical activity. Applicants might be commissioners, practitioners or managers involved with weight management services, public health or child health at a local, regional or national level. Alternatively, they might be academics with a track record of research (including health economics research and evaluation) in the area.
Applicants will have experience of multi-professional collaboration at a national or regional level, working with NHS organisations, local authorities, academia, and the wider public, private and voluntary sectors. They should also have previously worked with committees or advisory groups.
Strong interpersonal skills and good verbal and written communication skills are required. Applicants will ideally have experience of guidance development processes, with an understanding of systematic reviews, critical appraisal methods and the role of health economics. Once appointed, PDG members will work closely with NICE's technical team who are responsible for reviewing and presenting the evidence to the PDG and facilitating the drafting of recommendations.
Time commitment and conditions
The development phase begins in May 2012 and will continue until September 2013. During this period, CPHE will host an induction meeting and up to 6 PDG meetings which will be held approximately every 2 months from June 2012 until January 2013, then a final meeting in July 2013. The meetings will be a mixture of one and two-day events held in London or Manchester.
In addition to setting aside time to read papers and prepare for each meeting, PDG members are expected to comment on drafts as they are developed throughout the process.
PDG members do not receive any remuneration for their time. However, NICE will pay accommodation, travel and subsistence expenses if required.
Closing date for applications: 5pm on 14 February 2012
