Become a Clinical Advisor to the COPD guideline development group within the National Collaborating Centre for Chronic Conditions (NCC-CC)
The NCC-CC is based at the Royal College of Physicians. It is a multi-disciplinary collaboration that accepts commissions from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to develop clinical management guidelines for the NHS.
Clinical advisor is drawn from the NHS, healthcare professionals, and / or academia. The clinical advisor does not represent their organisations but is selected for their expertise and judgment.
Responsibilities of this role
As the clinical advisor you will be a key member of the in-house technical team. This involves working closely with the project manager, health service research fellow, information scientist and the health economist in order to:
- Provide a source of clinical advice to the technical team in the identification and review of the evidence
- Ensure that all relevant topics are considered
- Assist with the development of papers for presentation to the GDG, ensuring their appropriateness and relevance to the guideline
- Work with the health service research fellow to develop a coherent assessment of the available evidence
- Advise the technical team on the drafting and editing of the guideline, including responses to stakeholder and public consultation
- Draft relevant sections / elements of the guideline e.g. clinical introductions
- Attend all GDG meetings
- Participate in all pre GDG meetings (either in person or via teleconference)
- Attend other relevant meetings that relate to the guideline
Skills and experience:
Experience
- Previous experience developing evidence-based healthcare and clinical guidelines
- Ability to facilitate a systematic approach to developing consensus recommendations
- Working with patient/ carer representatives
Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent negotiating skills
Knowledge
- Expert clinical knowledge in the field of COPD
- Systematic reviews and critical appraisal
Time commitment and conditions
The guideline update is due to commence immediately with an Induction session scheduled for 24 September 2008. The Clinical Advisor is involved in the pre-development (scoping) phase, development and validation phase of the guideline. It is anticipated that the development phase will consist of approximately 6-7 GDG meetings held every 4-6 weeks in London. The total project is expected to span no longer than 18 months.
