Invitation to apply for the role of Chair to the Preventing unintentional injury in children Programme Development Group (PDG) within the Centre for Public Health Excellence
The Centre for Public Health Excellence (CPHE) leads the development of NICE public health guidance, which includes evidence-based recommendations for the NHS and the wider public health community. There is a particular focus on addressing inequalities in health.
We are currently seeking to recruit a Chair for an independent Programme Development Group (PDG) to develop guidance on the prevention of unintentional injury in children under 15. PDG Chair’s are drawn from the NHS, patients and carers groups, academia and the wider public health community. They do not represent their organisations but are selected for their expertise, experience of working with multidisciplinary and lay colleagues, and their understanding of public health and evidence based decision-making.
All members of PDGs have equal status, which reflects the relevance and importance of their different expertise and experience. They include health professionals and researchers as well as community members. All Group members need to attend regular meetings and undertake background reading.
Skills and experience
We are looking for an individual with a specialist or particular interest in the prevention of unintentional injury in children under 15. Applicants will have experience of working at a national or regional level. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written skills are required, along with an ability to communicate complex issues to differing audiences. Applicants will have experience of guidance development processes, preferably with an understanding of systematic reviews, critical appraisal methods and the role of health economics.
Once appointed, the applicant will work closely with the CPHE team responsible for reviewing and presenting the evidence to the PDG. They will have responsibility for ensuring appropriate consideration of the implications of guidance for equalities, in line with NICE’s equality scheme.
Time commitment and conditions
The development phase is scheduled to begin in September 2008 and will continue for approximately two years. During this period the Centre for Public Health Excellence will host up to approximately ten meetings every six weeks from January 2009 to June 2010. The meetings will be a mixture of one and two-day events held in London.
Closing date for applications 5pm on Friday 15 August 2008.
