Scholarships
10 NICE Scholars are appointed each year. The profiles of the first and second intake of NICE Scholars are now available. Scholarships last for one year. Scholars are typically specialist registrars (SpRs)/senior specialty registrars, or experienced health professionals from other disciplines (doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, allied health professionals, public health specialists and health service managers). The Scholars programme is designed to support professional development and, where appropriate, to contribute towards a formal qualification or training programme.
Scholars are expected to devote approximately one day a week to a Scholarship project over the period of a year. The activities need to be agreed with the local postgraduate deanery (if applicable), the individual's training supervisor (or equivalent) and the employer. As part of the application process, prospective scholars are required to propose a project and where possible it should relate to NICE's activities and meet an identified local need. Examples of potential projects that might be suitable activities for Scholars are available here.
In addition to their project-based activities, NICE Scholars are expected to act as local ambassadors for clinical and public health excellence and to promote the principles and, where appropriate the recommendations, of NICE guidance. This could be through teaching activities.
As with NICE Fellows, NICE Scholars are not paid. NICE will, however, meet all reasonable expenses (e.g. travel, accommodation) incurred in the course of carrying out Scholarship activities.
