Patient and public involvement
The views of patients, carers and the public matter to NICE. We want to involve them, as well as doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals and managers in our work. This page details NICE's commitment to involving patients, carers and the public and gives further information on how patients, carers and the public can get involved with NICE's work.
Opportunities to get involved
There are several ways you can get involved in NICE's work. This might be in helping us develop our guidance or help to put our guidance into practice. You might also want to become involved in making the decisions that affect how NICE works. To find out more please click on the links below.
Patient and Public Involvement Programme
The Patient and Public Involvement Programme (PPIP) provides NICE with advice on involving patients, carers and members of the public. Find out more about the Patient and Public Involvement Programme including contact details.
Read what NICE recommends
All NICE clinical guidance is available in formats specifically written for patients, carers and the public. Known as the ‘understanding NICE guidance' series, these documents summarise, in plain English, the recommendations made by NICE to health and other professionals. The documents are designed to complement, not replace, other sources of patient information that explain in more detail the condition and available treatments. Most of these documents contain contact information for relevant patient or carer organisations that can provide more detailed information and support for specific conditions.
You can search our collection of NICE guidance written for patients and the public.
Patient, carer and public involvement policy
NICE is committed to producing guidance that:
- meets the needs of patients, carers and the public
- involves patients, carers and the public in its development
In order to support this commitment NICE has produced a Patient, carer and public involvement policy.
NICE Equality scheme and Action plan
NICE is committed to promoting equality and eliminating unlawful discrimination in its work. To help NICE achieve this aim we have developed an Equality Scheme and Action Plan.
