8 October 2009 The scope defines what aspects of care are covered by the guideline and to whom it applies. Comments that were made by stakeholders during the consultation on the scope can be seen in the scope consultation table. The Guideline Development Group (GDG) oversees the development process. See below for a list of GDG members.

In July 2001 the following remit was received from the Department of Health and the Welsh Assembly Government:

To prepare clinical guidelines for the NHS in England and Wales on the management of deliberate self-harm (intentional self-poisoning or self-injury, irrespective of the apparent purpose of the act).

Following an update review of CG16 the revised remit (see below) was received from the Department of Health and the Welsh Assembly Government in April 2008:

To prepare clinical guidelines for the NHS in England and Wales on the management of deliberate self-harm (intentional self-poisoning or self-injury, irrespective of the apparent purpose of the act) to include the role of mental health professionals in ensuring service users who have self harmed receive appropriate treatment for underlying problems that may have led to the act of self-harm.
