NICE draft guidance update on hip replacement and resurfacing recommends more reliable artificial joints
NICE is updating its guidance on hip replacements and hip resurfacing. The updated draft recommendations include a stricter benchmark for the quality of hip prostheses, proposing that the new joint should work well in at least 95% of cases over 10 years, instead of the current 90% of cases.

NICE recommends tests to help diagnose serious bowel conditions
New guidance NICE advises doctors to use simple stool tests as an option to distinguish between potentially serious inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and less serious irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The faecal calprotectin test is used in people with recent lower gastrointestinal symptoms that could be due to either type of disorder and in whom assessment by a specialist is being considered.

In final draft guidance published by NICE, fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant (Iluvien, Alimera Sciences) is recommended as an option for the treatment of chronic diabetic macular oedema considered insufficiently responsive to available therapies.
