The NICE press team issues press releases on all published Clinical Guidelines, Technology Appraisals, and Public Health guidance, as well as for consultations on draft guidance and other news from NICE. Press releases are usually issued under embargo on the day before they are published on the website. NICE recommends another new treatment for lung cancer
People with lung cancer whose tumours test positive for a mutation will now have access to a third targeted treatment. NICE has given the go ahead for afatinib (also known as Giotrif and made by Boehringer Ingelheim) to be paid for by the NHS.

More options proposed for tackling anaemia in cancer patients
Cancer patients on chemotherapy, who are anaemic, are set to see six newly recommended treatments available through the NHS. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has drawn up draft guidance to recommend six treatments (known as erythropoiesis-stimulating agents or ESAs) which boost levels of red blood cells. NICE is now starting a consultation on the guidance

NICE draft guidance recommends a treatment for prostate cancer
In final draft guidance published today (15 April, 2014), NICE has recommended degarelix (Firmagon, Ferring Pharmaceuticals), as an option for treating advanced hormone dependent prostate cancer in people with spinal metastases who present with signs or symptoms of spinal cord compression.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is publishing new standards to raise the bar in the care and support of people experiencing sickle cell acute painful episodes from the minute they present to hospital until they are discharged. With an estimated 240,000 genetic carriers and up to 15,000 people living with the condition in the UK, sickle cell is one of the most commonly inherited serious genetic diseases in England.
