Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme

What is the Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme?

The Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme (MTEP) selects and evaluates new or innovative medical technologies (including devices and diagnostics). The programme complements and operates in conjunction with NICE's technology appraisal capacity, which evaluates new pharmaceutical and biotechnology products. MTEP helps the NHS adopt efficient and cost effective medical devices and diagnostics more rapidly and consistently.

The types of products which might be evaluated are medical devices that deliver treatment such as those implanted during surgical procedures; technologies that give greater independence to patients; and diagnostic devices or tests used to detect or monitor medical conditions.

What we do

The Medical Technologies Advisory Committee (MTAC) has two separate functions.

  • to select those technologies for which NICE should produce guidance and then route the selected technology to the appropriate NICE guidance producing programme.
  • to develop guidance on technologies which is issued by NICE as Medical Technologies Guidance.

Medical Technologies Advisory Committee (MTAC)

The Committee is comprised of 25 independent specialists with a broad range of medical technology and evaluation expertise. It is chaired by Professor Bruce Campbell, who has been the Chair of NICE's Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee since 2002 and has extensive experience of NICE's evaluation processes and guidance production. Process and methods guides

Technologies notified to the Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme are selected and routed, and guidance produced, in accordance with the programme process and methods guides.
