2008 Conference

NICE 2008: Excellence in action, 10th anniversary conference

3-4 December 2008

Manchester Central, Manchester

Content

‘NICE 2008: excellence in action', focused firmly on the practical. The event featured a range of ‘real life' case studies on how to implement NICE guidance and what works in practice.

NICE 2008 also features key sessions on NICE's future roles under the new arrangements described by Lord Darzi and how they will impact upon all those working in health services.

In addition, in response to feedback from last year's conference, there were more opportunities to network with colleagues during several ‘open space' workshops hosted by our partner organisations. Topics covered included: public health, commissioning in primary care, clinical engagement and secondary care, clinical audit and management.

Speakers

Conference speakers discussed their predictions for the NHS over the next 10 years and shared the latest news and views on the design, delivery and audit of NICE guidance.

Conference speakers included:

  • Lord Adebowale, Chief Executive, Turning Point
  • Dame Carol Black, National Director, Health and Work
  • Mark Britnell, Director General of Commissioning and Systems Management
  • Harry Cayton, Chief Executive, Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence
  • Professor David Hunter, Chairman, UKPHA
  • Andy McKeon, Head of Health, Audit Commission
  • Jenni Murray, Broadcaster and Journalist
  • David Nicholson, Chief Executive of the NHS in England
  • Dr Dinah Roy, Practice-based Commissioning Lead, Sedgefield Primary Care Trust

Shared Learning Awards

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the Shared Learning Awards for those who have shared their experiences of implementing NICE guidance (including what did and didn't work) with us. New this year was the opportunity for contestants to compete for a prize of £500 in one of three categories: general systems, clinical guidance and public health. The overall winner received an additional £1000.

All shortlisted candidates were offered free and discounted places at the conference - as well as a chance to share their experiences with conference delegates.

Who attended

NICE 2008 was aimed at all those working in healthcare and public health within the NHS, local authorities and the private, voluntary and community sectors, as well as patients, carers, the general public and those who represent them.
