Patients with hip fracture should be treated earlier

 
 

Patients with broken hips should be treated earlier and have surgery on the same day or the day after being admitted to hospital, says NICE. Currently, some patients have to wait several days before receiving surgery, during which time they can be left in pain and suffer complications.

Approval for new rheumatoid arthritis drug

 
 

NICE has recommended the use of the drug golimumab (Simponi) as an option for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Golimumab in combination with methotrexate is recommended for adults whose rheumatoid arthritis has responded inadequately to conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) only.

NICE guideline process earns international praise

NICE guidelines are among the most "trustworthy" in the world and meet a series of rigorous standards, a leading journal has concluded. An editorial published in the US journal Annals of Internal Medicine praises NICE for the way in which it produces its guidance. The journal now plans to publish future NICE guidelines so that they can reach a wider audience.

GPs following NICE LUTS guidance

Nearly half of GPs are following NICE advice on the management of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men, one year on from the launch of the guideline, a survey has found. The survey, involving 201 GPs, found that of the 46 per cent of GPs who were following the NICE guideline, 41 per cent said that they had greater confidence in conducting the necessary diagnostic tests.
