NHS should prioritise the treatment of sick babies, says NICE

 
 

The NHS should prioritise the treatment of babies with suspected early-onset neonatal infection and use antibiotics sensibly to avoid developing resistance to the drugs. Early-onset neonatal bacterial infection is the cause of death for 1 in 4 babies who develop it.

Call for better diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease

 
 

GPs should make an early diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) by performing an ankle brachial pressure index measurement, as NICE sets out new guidelines on the diagnosis and management of lower limb PAD.

Quality standards launched for colorectal cancer and stable angina

The quality standard for colorectal cancer includes eight statements designed to drive up care including a standard that states that  people with suspected colorectal cancer are offered a CT scan of the chest, abdomen and pelvis to determine the stage of the disease. The quality standard for stable angina has five statements on topics like diagnosis and first-line treatment.

End blacklisting of NICE-approved drugs

All NHS organisations should publish information which sets out which NICE technology appraisals are included in their local formularies from April 2013, the Department of Health has announced. The move comes after reports highlighted that not all local formularies include all of NICE's technology appraisals. This can lead to a postcode lottery where patients miss out on drugs approved by NICE.
