NICE launches database to cut inappropriate GP referrals

An online database offering GPs advice on referring patients from primary to secondary care could help to reduce the number of inappropriate referrals and ensure value for money in the NHS, says NICE. The NICE database covers referral advice for patients with the range of conditions NICE has published guidance on such as suspected cancer, lower back pain and psoriasis.

NICE is inviting registered stakeholders to comment on the development of a draft clinical guideline on lung cancer, the second most common cancer in the UK. Around 38,000 people are diagnosed with the cancer each year. Stakeholders have until the 29th November to send in comments.

Have your say on the development of quality standards for COPD and CKD in adults, as NICE launches a consultation on the draft quality standards. During the consultation period, NICE implementation consultants will be visiting GPs and PCTs to explore how the standards can be effectively and successfully put into practice.
