NICE consultation opens on assessing risk of fragility fracture in adults
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) today (9 February) opens a consultation on assessing the risk of fragility fracture in adults. The draft short clinical guideline aims to advise on methods to help clinicians assess who might be at risk of a fragility fracture, and will support them in identifying who will benefit from treatments that help prevent such fractures occurring.

The healthcare guidance body NICE has today (Wednesday 8 February) opened a consultation on the draft of its first guideline on the management of an acute painful sickle cell episode in hospital. Sickle cell is one of the most commonly inherited serious genetic disorders in England.

NICE consults on a new treatment for prostate cancer
NICE, the healthcare guidance body, has issued new draft guidance not recommending the use of abiraterone (Zytiga, Janssen) in combination with prednisone or prednisolone for the treatment of castration-resistant[1] metastatic prostate cancer that has progressed on or after docetaxel-containing therapy.

2013/14 COF consultation opens
NICE has today launched its first consultation on potential indicators for the proposed 2013/14 Commissioning Outcomes Framework (COF). Anyone with an interest in health is invited to comment on the 120 indicators, which cover a broad range of topics, including mental health, cancer and asthma.

Increase monitoring for severe asthma treatment, says NICE
Doctors who are considering offering a treatment for severe asthma, which involves heating the tissue of the lung airways, should take special care when deciding who to offer the procedure to and ensure that patients are fully informed about what is involved. This is because NICE has said that further research is still needed to show that the procedure is safe and clinically effective in the long term.

NICE has published guidance as part of its diagnostics assessment programme supporting the use of four new generation cardiac computed tomography (CT) scanners for people with suspected or known coronary artery disease (CAD) in whom imaging is difficult with earlier generation CT scanners.

NICE gives green light to prolonged-release exenatide for type 2 diabetes in final draft guidance
In final draft guidance published today (Friday 13 January) NICE, the healthcare guidance body, has confirmed its initial draft recommendation of prolonged release exenatide (Bydureon, Eli Lilly) in triple therapy regimens (in combination with metformin and a sulphonylurea, or metformin and a thiazolidinedione) as a treatment option for some people with type 2 diabetes.
