Updated NICE guidance on hip replacement and resurfacing recommends more durable artificial joints
Updated final NICE guidance published today recommends that people who need hip replacements should receive artificial joints that are more durable.  The updated recommendations include a stricter benchmark for the quality of hip prostheses, proposing that the new joint should work well in at least 95% of hip replacements over 10 years, instead of the current 90%.

NICE consults on draft guidance recommending new drug for type 2 diabetes
NICE is currently appraising canagliflozin when used in combination with other anti-diabetic drugs, including insulin, for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. In draft guidance issued for consultation NICE has recommended canagliflozin as a treatment option for some people with the condition.

Exercise is a core treatment in managing osteoarthritis, says updated NICE guidance on the condition, published today (Wednesday 12 February).  The clinical guideline on the care and management of osteoarthritis in adults reviews and updates a range of recommendations from the original 2008 guidance.

More support is needed for the carers of people with schizophrenia, says NICE
The NHS should provide greater help and support to the relatives and carers of people with psychosis or schizophrenia. In wide-ranging updated guidance on treating and managing psychosis and schizophrenia in adults, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence says carers? needs should be assessed to ensure they get the right level of support.

NICE publishes its first Medtech Innovation Briefings today (Tues 4 February) on a range of novel technologies: a device to cool the brain in patients who?ve suffered a heart attack, a system for measuring narrowing of arteries in people with angina, a hydrosurgery device for cleaning wounds and a test to diagnose kidney damage.
