Description of submission

Aim

The main purpose of the Partnership is to provide access to best practice and guidelines information and supporting resources for Service Users, Carers, Staff and Managers/Professional Leads in Derbyshire. This is achieved through the development of a Web Site based set of resources with open and staff accessible parts containing relevant information and materials appropriate for the use by each group. Therefore, the overall purpose is to enhance and improve service delivery and clinical care through the use, availability and access to evidence based practice resources.

Objectives

Objectives: 1. Provide consistent access to appropriate information and resources to enable the implementation of NICE guidelines in DMHST. 2. Provide the means of disseminating the local interpretation of national general advice into locally relevant and applicable clinical priorities. 3. Provide access to and availability of this information and supporting good and best practice information for practitioners (and others). 4. Provide information to enable the interpretation of guidelines implementation into individual team and practitioner behaviour change. Scope: 1. To cover all NICE Guidelines on the DMHST NICE Guidelines Priority list, commencing with those of highest importance/priority (category 1). 2. To be available in an appropriate form information and resources required by a) clinical staff, b) service managers, c) service users and d) carers. 3. To be available from any point with internet access. Outline project deliverables: 1. NICE Guideline summary information available tailored to the needs of clinical staff, managers and professional leads. 2. Template available to structure summary information and resources for all applicable guidelines. 3. Web-based solution accessible to DMHST staff and the public providing access to appropriate information and resources. 4. Ability to add further guidelines using the common template from the local Trust, and update remotely the content for all the guidelines information. 5. Maintenance of the content of the site.

Context

The Trust is required to disseminate and implement clinically the national NICE Clinical Guidelines. It is also required to make available the necessary tools and information for clinical staff to use the guidelines. Investigation indicates that there are a number of major issues preventing the achievement of this; 1. A lack of structures, systems and processes for dissemination. 2. A lack of interpretation of national general advice into locally relevant and applicable clinical priorities. 3. A lack of access to and availability of this information and supporting good and best practice information for practitioners. 4. A lack of information to enable the interpretation of guidelines implementation into individual team and practitioner behaviour change. The Trust has now implemented the structures, processes and systems required by NICE for the participation in guideline consultation, receipt and initial interpretation. The next stage is to improve and refine this process, and provide a system that gives ready and available access to the required information and resources. This will be backed up in due course by a requirement of clinical staff to declare annually their awareness and appropriate operation of all relevant NICE Guidelines.

Methods

A section on the NICE guidance - Depression: management of depression (CG23) in primary and secondary care is now complete. Work has now commenced to provide relevant new sections covering all relevant mental health guidelines.

Results and evaluation

Best practice groups periodically review content of site.

Key learning points

As the site expands, it becomes more difficult to ensure that all hyperlinks remain working and that information remains accurate and up to date.
