Description of submission

Aim

To provide a step-by-step guide for staff within the Department of Clinical Effectiveness to enable them to follow, understand and use the NICE Database if necessary to manage the implementation of NICE guidance within the Trust

Objectives

1. To provide information to help Clinical Effectiveness staff manage the implementation of NICE guidance within the Trust in the absence of the NICE Manager

2. To devise a simplistic interpretation of a complex set of systems to help evidence compliance with NICE guidance for the purposes of NHSLA and Healthcare Commission standards

Context

The main point of contact for NICE guidance implementation within HDFT is the NICE Manager. As a result other colleagues within the Department of Clinical Effectiveness are not well versed in the process requirements of NICE implementation should the NICE Manager be absent from work for a sustained period of time. It was felt that a step-by-step guide would help in such a situation whilst also creating a clear document to evidence how HDFT employs a robust NICE implementation process

Methods

1. Guide produceed which is used in the induction of new staff to NICE processess within the department

2. Guide useful in discussions about the potential development of a an automated system of NICE guidance dissemination and monitoring as it involved simplifying the workflow into manageable steps

Results and evaluation

Results are relatively intangible until a situation whereby the NICE Manager is absent from work and it is necessary for staff to rely on the guide for information and support, however it has been well recieved by new starters and the rest of the team.

Key learning points

Most organisations rely upon one individual for their NICE guidance dissemination and monitoring and would suffer from a 'knowledge gap' should they leave or be absent from work for a sustained period. A step-by-step guide helps break a complex process down into achieveable elements that can be followed by anyone.
